"Gin Lane," by William Hogarth  (1751), visually summarized the impact of alcoholism. In this detail are portrayed three metaphors of different aspects of a broadly conceived notion of child abuse: a mother's death and her child's abandonment, a child impaled on a stake, and, prominent in the foreground, a baby tumbling from its drunken mother's arms to the sidewalk.
