Original promo material from October and November 1982
Richard
E. Smith, Jr.
All
Guitars,
Backing Vocals
Rick is our 19-year-old guitarist. He originally comes from Brockton and now resides in Middleboro. He is 5'11" and weighs 160. His birth date is November 3, 1962 and he is a Scorpion. He has light brown hair and hazel eyes.
Rick's favorite hobby is motocross and he loves both trail and street riding. His favorite place is Maine, and his fantasy place to go is Xanadu.
Rick began playing
guitar
at age 9, and has been influenced by Rush,
Ozzy
Osbourne, and Hugh Ferguson and Company. He still favors Rush.
His highest musical
accomplishment as yet was playing at Lincoln Park Ballroom, and his
goal
is to play at concert arenas such as the Providence Civic Center. Rick
once met Loverboy.
His favorite foods are lobster and lasagna, and he hates dead zombies. Rick's favorite movies and books are those of science fiction. He enjoyed Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Trek the best. His favorite writer is Gene Roddenberry.
When asked how he felt about Modern Art, Rick replied, "It is THE band."
Rick's classical/
jazz
oriented guitar licks and their incredible speed and accuracy add
tremendous
effect and color to the lead section of Modern Art. Rick also does a
lot
of the composing and his businesslike manner adds greatly to the
solidity
of the band's composure. His strong backing voice is also an important
addition to the vocal harmony which we hear in many of their tunes.
Al Tavers
All
Keys,
Lead Vocals

His favorite place that he's ever been is Northern California, where he lived for several months, and he also likes Florida and upstate Maine. He fantasizes about living off of the land someday in British Columbia on the Pacific coast of Canada.
Al began playing keyboards with 6 free lessons that came with the organ which his family bought when he was 14. He continued those lessons for about 6 months but then quit because he preferred to jam with other musicians and felt that he learned more from them. He remembers always having a fascination with the piano since childhood.
He feels that the bands which most inspired him were Aerosmith, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. His favorite bands right now include Journey, Styx, Rush, Foreigner, Loverboy, Genesis, and Shooting Star. The height of Al's musical career as yet was backing Steppenwolf in 1978. His persistence comes from a determination to push a band onto a major label, and to international recording fame. He has met Neil Young and several members of
When asked about his favorite food and drink, we found that he loves steak, Italian cuisine, fruit - especially tropical, seafood, natural foods, and sweet wines - but that he dislikes pork, veal, hard liquor and beer, and soda pop. Al goes to see a lot of movies and especially enjoyed Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Conan The Barbarian, and Sinbad movies. He also likes Science Fiction and Fantasy in his reading and his favorite writers are Roger Zelazny and JRR Tolkein.
He dislikes the city in general, but likes Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sacramento, California; and Gainesville and Orlando, Florida.
Some of the other bands which he's been in were Riff Raff, Nightwing, Lookout, and Cruizer.
Al is also a contributing member of Greenpeace, the National Wildlife Federation, and several other environmental protection organizations. He feels that the protection of our natural ecosystems is of the utmost importance, and should be the primary concern of any and all world governments.
When asked about his personal feelings on Modern Art we got this, verbatim:
"I believe that in Modern Art we have a mixture of honest and decent people, as well as each of us being accomplished musicians individually. The band has the definite potential of being one of the hottest local acts within a matter of 6 to 12 months, as our rate of progress in accomplishing band matters would indicate to me. We are all ambitious and determined, and none of us use drugs or abuse alcohol - the downfall of many bands. Our sound is versatile and unique, and our position on the rock scene should be evident in a short period of time.
Al is new to the band, but his driving determination, knowledge of the music business, and common sense of authority will be there to support the band through the strongest tempests in the years to come. His carnivalesque keyboard riffs and medieval to space age spectrums within his lyrics, along with the delivery of strong, distinct vocal lines contribute largely to the originality of Modern Art's sound.
